What is Physical Therapy for Seniors?

The goal of Physical Therapy, also called PT, is to help an individual achieve the Resident’s Highest level of functional independence with general mobility. This type of care can also ease pain and improve a seniors overall quality of life.

If an injury or illness keeps a patient from performing daily tasks, a doctor is likely to suggest physical therapy. Other reasons may include the following:

Manage Chronic Conditions, especially those that may cause pain

Fall Prevention & safety through improving balance and aiding mobility

Prevent future Surgery by correcting unhealthy compensatory habits

Accident, injury, stroke or surgery rehab

To help adapt to mobility aid(s) or artificial limb

Physical Therapy Treatment Plans for Each Individual

During an initial physical therapy session, the therapist’s goal is to assess needs after examining the patient. They are likely to ask questions pertaining to:

Range of motion

Pain level(s)

Issues with daily tasks

Medical history

Sleep Quality or Disturbances

Additional relative symptoms

The questions asked at this first meeting help the PT hone in on the specific needs of each patient. Additionally, it can help to address any sources which may be contributing to pain or impairment. In Addition to these types of questions, a physical therapist may have a senior perform physical tests so that they can assess things like:

Posture

Balance

Range of Motion

Ability to reach, bend or grasp

Heart Rate/Rhythm

Walking/ climbing Stairs

Vitals while performing tasks
